HOW TO REPAIR POST-SUMMER SKIN

Too much sun, fun, sea, chlorine, and jetlag can lead to long-term skin damage, such as hyperpigmentation, fine lines and dehydration. Some of these can be more challenging to treat with skincare routines alone.

The light from the sun emits ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can accelerate the aging process by breaking down the collagen and elastin and by increasing pigmentation. UVA rays from the sun stimulate the Melanocytes (pigment cells) to produce the pigment called Melanin. Women with imbalanced hormone levels; being on the pill, pregnant or in menopause, are more prone to pigmentation. Hormonal pigmentation can be exacerbated by the sun and can result in patchy dark spots, often on the forehead and upper lip.

Cosmetic Acupuncture and Medical Microneedling are both superb at fighting pigmentation and will give your skin the boost it needs for the Autumn season. The micro-wound healing response from the needles, speeds up cellular turnover and promotes the remodelling of new healthier skin cells. Cosmetic Acupuncture and microneedling ‘’brake’’ the pigmented cells, initiate the wound healing cascade and trigger the release of softer collagen, hyaluronic acid and growth factors, to heal and soften the skin. This also offers a speed up of the natural exfoliation process, removing those dead cells that are clinging on, and revealing the fresher, younger skin cells below. The result is gorgeous glowy skin leaving behind the post-holidays dryness and dullness. Both Cosmetic Acupuncture and microneedling have a minimal to none recovery time without completely stripping off tan to remind you those nice times lying in the sun… because the epidermis (the top layer of the skin) remains intact during both treatments.

Athena’s Post Summer skincare advice

  • Continue using sunscreen. According to studies, sunscreen doesn’t only prevent sun damage but it can reverse the signs of sun damage! So don’t pack it away at the end of the summer! Continue using SPF all year round.
  • Consider adding facial oil to your evening routineEarly autumn is a good time to add a facial oil to your skincare routine. Choose a treatment and soothing oil and pair it up with an evening face massage to improve skin circulation. Add a drop of facial oil to your daily moisturiser to power up your moisturiser.
  • Exfoliate gently. Gentle exfoliation will help you to keep your complexion even and glowing. But don’t exfoliate too often as it may irritate the skin and impair the skin’s protective barrier. Once a week will be sufficient to get that glow going!
  • Wear Vitamin C: Vitamin Cis a powerful antioxidant and has brightening and exfoliating benefits. It also pairs really well with SPF to protect your skin from environmental stressors. It’s all the more important to apply vitamin C a few times per week to help fade those pigmentation spots that appear after the summer.
